Being an island surrounded by the Indian Ocean, there’s a lot of good fishing to be had around Nias. If in doubt visit the local market and you will see scores of big game fish lined up every day. A short boat ride from the coast the sea reaches depths of hundreds of meters and the fishing here is world class. Locals using handlines regularly reel in pelagic game fish such as Marlin, Spanish mackerel, Tuna, Mahi-Mahi (Dolphin fish), Wahoo, Giant Trevally and Sailfish. Surf charter boats visiting North Nias also report similarly impressive results.

Sport fishing here is done from local fishing boats, which are available for hire in every port and fishing village along the coast. Sizes vary, from small Perahu boats that takes only 2-3 people, to larger boats which can take up to 8-12 passengers. Prices vary according to size and comfort. Be prepared to bargain, but be polite and respectful about it. Remember that most fishermen are struggling to feed their families.

A lot of fishing is also done from the shore, and you will see many local people fishing from piers and exposed rocks along the coastline. Fishing is probably the most popular pastime for men on Nias Island.

If you take your sport fishing seriously, you should probably bring your own gear. Otherwise there is a shop in Gunung Sitoli town where sport fishing gear is sold (Usaha Timur on Jalan Diponegoro no 138). If you just want to try fishing local style, you can use a handline, which is available in every boat and for sale in every coastal village.
